At Orchard Veterinary Medical Center, we offer veterinary acupuncture. For thousands of years, acupuncture has been a successful treatment option in humans for a wide variety of medical conditions including pain, gastrointestinal imbalance, neurologic dysfunction, dry eye, seizures, urinary disorders, and arthritis. Recently, we have applied this same technique to our veterinary patients. Acupuncture is the process of inserting sterile, thin needles through the skin at specific locations throughout the body. These “points” typically correlate to a convergence of blood vessels, nerves, muscles, or other important anatomical structures. An electrical signal is then sent to the brain through the nerves and spinal cord. The brain, in turn, responds by releasing the body’s own substances to relieve pain, decrease swelling or excessive fluid, stimulate nerves, or balance other body systems. Most animals really enjoy their acupuncture treatments. They do not have the capability of predetermining if the treatment will work or not. Thus, their results are genuine. Each treatment is performed on a comfortable, padded surface and lasts approximately 30-40 minutes. Commonly, veterinary acupuncture is combined with massage, electrical stimulation, therapeutic laser, stretches or other physical therapies to provide the best outcome for your pet.
